Lyda Mae Capps Mason, of Irving, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2008.  She was born on January 1, 1914 in Thornton, Texas.  She was the second child born to Thomas Marion and Della Mae Capps.  Lyda was one of five siblings who lost their mother shortly after giving birth to twins.  The family was devastated by their mother’s untimely death, as all the children were pre-teens.  They had an Aunt Stella who became a surrogate mother to each of them until Tom Capps remarried.  His new wife was very young and immature at motherhood.  As a result, Lyda’s childhood memories were somewhat turbulent.  The Mason family also resided in the area and Lyda Mae met Horace Mason as a teen.  Their romance blossomed into marriage in 1935.  They moved to the Dallas area after the birth of twins, Jackie and Jerry, so that Horace could seek employment.  Horace purchased a small house in the Union Bower area of Irving in the early forties and Lyda resided there until moving to a nursing home in 1998.  After her twins were almost grown, Lyda sold Avon products door-to-door and made many friends in Union Bower as she “peddled” Avon.  She later was employed for approximately twelve years by the Irving ISD as a night lead custodian.  She also served several years as a church custodian after Horace’s death.  Lyda Mae was a dedicated and devoted member of Union Bower Baptist Church for some twenty years until she united with the Knight Lane Baptist Church, now Memorial Baptist, in 1964.  She was a marvelous Sunday school teacher of young children in both churches for over forty years.  Her main emphasis was Bible memory, and she taught hundreds of children to memorize scripture.  They were always given a prize for every verse they could quote.  Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Horace Mason in 1988, and twin son Jerry Mason in 1994, survivors include her son Jackie Mason of Irving; sisters-in-law Kathryn Capps of Groesbeck, and Joyce Deans of McKinney; and grandchildren Randall Mason, Karen Mason, Tracey Mason, and Sawyer Mason.   Funeral services will be held 11 AM Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at Memorial Baptist Church, 614 S.
