Obituary for Audrey "Grace" Whitney (Burkham)

Audrey "Grace"  Whitney (Burkham)
Audrey Grace Burkham Whitney, known by many as “Amazing Grace” or “Nena”, died at age 92 on July 27, 2014 surrounded by her family. She was born in Camp County, Texas on September 9, 1921 to Kimp Burkham and Vira Lu Vennie Newkirk Burkham. Grace met and married the love of her life, Robert Arthur Whitney on August 26, 1937 and they enjoyed 61 years of marriage until his death in 1998. She attended Durham Business College and went on to work successfully as a lumber broker from 1937 until 1955. Grace then decided to become a real estate broker, eventually forming her own companies. She owned and operated Broadway North Management Association in San Antonio before retiring and moving to Lake Bob Sandlin and then later to Irving, and continuing her real estate brokerage well into the 1990’s. Grace was a true patriot and was proud to be a part of the Daughters of The Republic of Texas. Her family and Christian faith were important to her and she enjoyed reading, sewing, cooking and was interested in genealogy. Grace was famous for her chocolate and coconut pies. She is preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, five brothers, seven sisters and her grandson Timothy Redford. Grace leaves a legacy of love and will be greatly missed by her daughter Lea Whitney; son Robert Arthur Whitney, Jr. and his wife Sharlene Whitney; grandchildren Monica Windes and her husband Aaron Frank Windes; Robert Arthur Whitney, III and wife Angie Whitney; Dannielle Whalen and husband James Patrick Whalen, Jr; David Redford; Lynne Griffin and husband Mark Griffin; great grandchildren Carter Aaron Windes, Jacob Avery Windes, Weston Anderson Windes, Taylor Grace Whitney, Robert Arthur Whitney IV, Whitney Elizabeth Whalen, William Patrick Whalen, Sarah Grace Redford, Michael Ray Redford, Leanna Elizabeth Redford, Alexis Sheed, Nathan Griffin and his wife Brittany Brown Griffin; Ashley Griffin McElroy and her husband Brandon McElroy; Daniel Griffen and Audrey Griffin along with great-great grandchildren Katie Elizabeth Redford and Paxton Griffin. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Plymouth Park Baptist Church at 1714 N. Story Road in Irving with Reverend Ken Branam officiating. Interment will follow at Bethel Cemetery in Southern Franklin County at 3:00 PM. The family will receive friends at Brown’s Memorial Funeral Home in Irving Friday, August 1, 2014 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
