Obituary for Carolyn Christine Bridgers (WInter)

Carolyn Christine Winter Bridgers. Early in the morning of Friday, July 3, 2015, Carolyn graduated from earth to heaven in her room at Brookdale Assisted Living in Irving. She had been an Irving resident since October 2006 when she moved from Humble, Texas (near Houston) to Hearthstone (now Elmcroft) Assisted Living in Irving. Carolyn was born in San Antonio on December 14, 1917, to Joseph Christian Winter and Emma Josephine (Cronk) Winter. The youngest of three girls she celebrated her 97th birthday last December. Carolyn is survived by two daughters and their husbands: Bonnie Saur and husband Gene of Irving and Melissa Herren and husband Scott of Los Alamos, New Mexico. She was grandmother to Tim Roper and wife Holly of Austin, Christina Herren of Houston and Andrew Herren of Austin; and great grandmother to Joseph Christian Herren of Houston. She leaves behind many dear friends both in Irving and in Humble. Following her high school graduation in 1936, she worked as a long distance telephone operator with Bell Telephone Company. In 1940 she took flying lessons and obtained a pilot’s license, which was unusual for women at the time. In January 1942 she married Alex Bridgers, her high school sweetheart. She and Alex had been married for 61 years until his death in 2003. Carolyn lived in Texas almost all of her life except for 12 years in Valley Stream, Long Island, New York, and a few years in New Orleans. In her younger days she was an accomplished seamstress, like her mother, and could crochet. She and Alex were longtime volunteers together at Northeast Hospital in Humble with Carolyn serving there over thirty years. At age 86 she was still an active bowling team member, a hospital volunteer and maintained a vegetable garden at the home. She was an active member of First Methodist Church in Humble since 1974. She also loved attending Bible Class at both Elmcroft Assisted Living and at Brookdale. Carolyn will be remembered for her gentle and gracious ways, her sweet personality, her love of reading and playing games, and her interest in other people. The family requests in lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Carolyn’s honor to Gospel for Asia, 1116 St. Thomas Way, Wills Point, TX, 75169. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, July 25, 2015 at Brown’s Memorial Funeral Home and friends and family are invited to gather at the funeral home at 2:00 PM for visitation prior to the service.
