Obituary for Marguerite "Lee" Berlin (Patterson)

Marguerite "Lee" Berlin (Patterson)
Marguerite Lee Patterson Berlin
March 21, 1939 – March 31, 2016

Our beloved, beautiful, sweet and loving mother and wife, Marguerite “Lee” Patterson Berlin, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2016, surrounded by her family. Lee was born March 21, 1939 in Pontiac, Michigan, to Harcourt S. and Marguerite Lee Patterson. She graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Arts in Education in 1961. Lee taught 3rd grade at West Bloomfield (Michigan) Elementary School for two years. She had returned to the University of Michigan to start a Masters degree, before meeting and marrying the love of her life, Lee Porter Berlin, on June 22, 1963. Lee and Lee moved to Metuchen, New Jersey in 1963; their son, Eric, was born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, in 1965. They moved to their first home in Murray Hill, New Jersey later that year. The family moved briefly to London where daughter, Karen, was born in 1967. They returned to the United States, moving back into their home in Murray Hill. Lee and Lee were very active in the New Providence Presbyterian Church, with Mr. Lee singing in the choir and Mrs. Lee volunteering with various groups, including playing the piano for choral groups. Her life revolved around her family, raising her two children, and her faith. Lee loved to entertain and cook and would host cocktail and dinner parties regularly, in addition to ensuring that her family of four ate dinner every night together. Lee and Lee were part of a gourmet dinner group with close friends the Denckers, the Flanagans and the Rogers. Lee loved to knit, crochet, and sew and would easily whip up clothes, costumes for plays, or curtains and bedspreads for the home (and even matching pilgrim outfits for the Bicentennial celebration in 1976). The family moved to Wilton, Connecticut, in 1979. They were active in the Wilton Presbyterian Church, where both children regularly attended youth group. Lee worked as an Assistant Administrator at Ogden House for several years while the children were in high school. After both children graduated from high school and were in college, Lee and Lee moved to Houston, Texas, in 1986, where they were active in the Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church. Lee had a close circle of friends and played tennis regularly at the Houston Racquet Club. Their final move came in 1991, when Lee and Lee moved to Irving, Texas. After Mr. Lee’s retirement from Exxon in 1993, Lee and Lee traveled extensively throughout the United States and abroad, including trips to Australia, South Africa, Nicaragua and Costa Rica to see their son, Eric, along with trips to London and Scotland with their choir from Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, where they were active in the church and choir for more than 15 years. Lee had a severe stroke in 2002 and, despite all odds, and through prayer and faith, she survived and worked hard to gain back her strength, independence and a wonderful sense of humor. She worked out regularly at the Sports Club at the Four Seasons in Las Colinas and had a close circle of friends and neighbors, in addition to her fellow choir members, who provided constant support and encouragement. For the last three years of her life, Lee was blessed by the friendship and love of Elena Camargo Quenette, who provided daily care and companionship through Silverado Home Health Care. Her greatest loves were her husband, and her children. She is survived by her husband, Lee, who cherished her throughout their 53-year marriage and cared for her 24/7 following her stroke; her son, Eric Berlin of Dallas; her daughter, Karen Berlin Cooperstein, and husband, Chuck, of Irving; her sister, Barbara Kimball, of Monterey, California; her brother, Harcourt “Buzz” Patterson, Jr. of Union Pier, Michigan; and numerous in-laws and nieces and nephews. Family visitation will take place at Brown’s Memorial Funeral Home, 707 N. MacArthur Blvd., in Irving, on Friday, April 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial service and celebration of her life will take place at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, 9800 Preston Road, in Dallas, on Saturday, April 16, at 2 p.m. The family suggests remembrances and memorials be directed to Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church Music Department, Irving Cares, or the charity of your choice. Lee's Memorial Service will be streamed live on the Preston Hollow Presbyterian Website at www.phpc.org
