Obituary for Willie Ross Shiflet

Willie Ross Shiflet, age 91, died Saturday, May 7, 2016. He was born in Chandler, Texas on June 29, 1924 to Raby Ross and Winnie (Maynard) Shiflet. In December of 1942, Willie joined the United States Navy, serving during World War II participating in the invasions of both Iwo Jima and Normandy. He served as a Bugler on both of his ships before his discharge in November of 1945. One of his proudest memories that he told, was being on the bridge of a ship looking through his binoculars and seeing the flag raised over Mount Iwo Jima. Willie was employed by LTV, Cooper Airmotive, and then Aviall Aviation where he retired in 1991; and was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church of Irving. He is preceded in death by his wife of fifty-six years Christine Lauretta Shiflet, son Wendell Ross Shiflet and brother Howard Shiflet. Left to cherish his memory is son Curtis Shiflet and Wife Teresa of Irving; Grandchildren Angela Shiflet Headrick and wife Donna of Irving and Jason Shiflet of Frisco along with many cousins nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at Brown’s Memorial Funeral Home between the hours of 6:00 and 8:00 pm. A funeral will be held 10:00 am, Thursday, May 12, 2016 in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church of Irving. A committal with Military Honors, will be held at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens, immediately following the service. The family requests memorials to DAV, Disabled American Veterans at https://www.dav.org
