Sonya Bilbrey, native Texan and 49 year Irving resident, formerly of Grand Prairie, died in Irving on May 23, 2016 at the age of 77. Life started for Sonya in Post, Texas on September 2, 1938 when she was born to Brooks and Irene (Wright) Campbell. She enjoyed a career in Data Processing for the Irving Independent School District until her retirement in 2000. Sonya was dedicated and devoted loving wife and mother who had a passion for sewing, particularly quilting. She was a member of the Irving Quilt Guild, as well as a past treasurer. Sonya also belonged to the Embroidery Club and will be remembered and revered by countless people for her warmth and generosity that she expressed through making Angel Quilts for children’s hospitals and Valor Quilts for war veterans. Sonya won top prize, “Best in Show” for one of her quilts in 2014, that she affectionately referred to as “Pinky.” It was important to Sonya that her love, kindness and respect was shown to others, and she taught her children the importance of doing this as well. She is preceded in death by her parents and she will be forever missed by those left to cherish her memory which include her beloved husband of 59 years, Robert Bilbrey of Irving; son Terry Bilbrey and wife Charlotte, also of Irving; daughter Annette Burkhalter and husband Brad of Grand Prairie; granddaughter Lindsey Pompizzi and husband Chris of Chicago,IL; grandsons Travis Bilbrey of Tool, TX, Brett Burkhalter and wife Tierney and Beau Burkhalter, all of Grand Prairie; great grandchildren Lily Moore and Delaney Burkhalter along with numerous friends. A funeral service will be officiated by Dr. Jim Gerlach at 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 26, 2016 at Brown’s Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with visitation from 10:00 to 11:00 am, one hour prior to the service. Interment immediately following at Shady Grove Cemetery in Grand Prairie.
