Thelma Coleman, age 103, died Wednesday, June 1, 2016. She was born July 5, 1912 in Keota, Oklahoma, and moved to Irving January 1, 1936. Thelma is preceded in death by her parents S. T. and Elizabeth (Barnard) Coleman; brother Travis T. Coleman; sister Tilla Coleman Lindsey; nephews Robert Clifton Coleman and Travis Lavern Coleman. She is survived by cousins Virginia Baker, of The Woodlands, and Charlene Watson of Arlington and dearest friend David W. Kummer, of Atlanta Georgia. Thelma was employed by Interstate Theatres from 1940 up until retirement in 1974, as secretary to Mr. Karl Hoblitzelle and as corporate secretary of the Hoblitzelle Foundation. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Irving, where she was elected as an Elder in 1993 and named Elder Emeritus in 1996. Thelma was also an active member of Executive Women International where she was president of the Dallas Chapter, international corporate director and named life member of Dallas Chapter 1981. She was also very active in the Irving community where she chaired the Spring Festival Home Tour for 3 years; organized and chaired the Historic Church Tour, which was part of the downtown Christmas celebration. In 1994, Thelma was named High Spirited Citizen. She was very active in city, county, state and national politics and voted in every election since 1931. Thelma was a member of Dallas Needle and Textile Guild, where she designed and stitched many ecclesiastical pieces for First Presbyterian Church in Irving, which included 3 pastor’s stoles, paraments and wall hangings. In 1997, an astronaut on Columbia asked Thelma to design and stitch a piece that would be symbolic of First Presbyterian Church in Irving. Thelma accepted the invitation and in April of 1998, she was invited by NASA to witness the launch in Florida; the completed piece flew 16 days (four million miles,) and now is framed and originally hung in the First Presbyterian Church and now hangs proudly in Irving City Hall. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 am, Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens. The family request memorials to Woodhaven Presbyterian Church, 3650 N.
