Barbara Ann Strubhar passed away in Irving, Texas on July 18, 2016 at age 83. Born on December 7, 1932 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri to Dewey and Myrl Lee Burnside, Barbara Ann Burnside spent her early life in Marmaduke, Arkansas and in Texarkana, Texas where her father worked for the Cotton Belt Railroad. In 1950, Barbara graduated from Texarkana Texas High where she played French horn in the Tiger Band. Following graduation, she attended Texarkana College for two years and later, while also taking care of home and family, completed her undergraduate degree at NTSU in1967. She received honors as the outstanding Business Education student for that year. Barbara married her husband of 60 years, Malcolm “Mack” Strubhar, in 1955. Husband, Mack, survives her as well as daughter Lita Karen Strubhar, granddaughter Briana Kay and her husband, Stephen Kay, and great-granddaughter, Sophie Kay. She is also survived by her son Joseph Lee Strubhar, his wife Thanh Strubhar, and grandsons Binh and Canh Strubhar of Austin, Texas. Always a creative person, Barbara was a professional-level seamstress, an artist – even a carpenter – building several projects for her home and designing and building a dove cote with her son. With a rare ability to read instruction and teaching manuals and actually understand them, she taught herself high-level sewing and tailoring techniques, English hand-smocking, tatting, knitting, and crochet – needle arts that can be difficult to master even with instruction. As a member of a smocking guild, she made smocked caps that were distributed to hospitals for premature babies, and she enjoyed smocking dresses for her granddaughter. Barbara was a member of Plymouth Park United Methodist Church (PPUMC) for more than ten years, although unable to attend in recent years. Memorial service arrangements are pending.
