Gilbert B.  Ackerman
Gilbert B. Ackerman died last week after nearly 88 years of healthy life. He was born in a Lutheran hospital in York NE on September 21st, 1928 to Gottlieb and Bertha Ackerman. Gilbert grew up as a farmer’s son in Hampton NE, during his high school years became very active in athletics and was part of a class D state basketball championship. He later entered into the United States Army, where he was deployed and served primarily in Europe, during the Korean War. Gilbert married Marjorie Westfall in Sioux City Iowa on July 17th 1955, and remained happily married until they were separated by her death on April 10th, 2008. He worked in the airline industry for 40 plus years, where he spent most of his career as a radio operator for Braniff Airlines. Gilbert very much enjoyed being outside where he often was found, camping, fishing, playing golf or watching football. He was an avid photographer, especially in his earlier years. Gilbert was a lifetime member of the Lutheran church, and a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran church in Irving since 1963. He is preceded in death by his wife of almost 54 years Marjorie (Westfall) Ackerman. Left to carry on his legacy son, Douglas, and wife Kelli of Arlington, TX; son David, and wife Michelle of Corinth, TX, and three granddaughters, Haley, Hillary and Abi. A funeral service will be held 10:00 am, Friday, September 2, 2016 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Irving with an internment immediately following at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens.
