Obituary for Shirley J. Wyatt (Anderson)

Shirley J. Wyatt (Anderson)
Shirley June Wyatt passed away at her home on September 30, 2016, in Irving, Texas. The only child of Carl Henry Anderson and Ima Jewel Anderson, Shirley was born on June 6, 1932 in Warrenton, MO. She is survived by her beloved sons, Scott R. Humrickhouse (Stephani) and Hal A. Humrickhouse, and grandson, John W. Humrickhouse, all of Raleigh, North Carolina. She was predeceased by her parents. Shirley spent her formative years in Des Moines, Iowa and Warrenton, Missouri – a proud Mid-Westerner- and attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota and the University of Texas in Austin, Texas, and received her bachelor’s degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. After her marriage to Ralph R. Humrickhouse, the couple and their sons lived in Dallas until the family moved to Raleigh, North Carolina. Shirley lived in Raleigh until 1983 when she returned to Dallas to care for and provide company to her loving mother, Ima Jewel. Shirley enjoyed many activities. Tall (5 feet 12 inches as she would call it!) and statuesque, Shirley was a fashion model, a ranked United States Tennis player and an avid bridge player. Her greatest love, however, was watching her two sons play sports: Hal from the bleachers on the baseball sidelines and following Scott on the golf course. She was extremely proud of her grandson’s accomplishments as a surgical resident. She was a devoted teacher: she coached tennis and taught English and Latin in Wake County, North Carolina and Latin in Irving, Texas. She was well-known for her national Latin teaching awards and competitions, her Latin teams (who always placed highly!) and her toga and Monty Python parties. She kept in touch with her Latin students until her passing. On behalf of our Mother, the family would like to thank her dear friend, Paris Bahcall, and her family for their kindness, care and love shown to her the last 20+ years…. Charlene Sorrels and her family for their lifelong friendship and many happy days and memories, and certainly, her caregiver, Christina, for her devoted attention to our Mother over the last several years. Words cannot express the profound love and gratitude we have for them all. A memorial service will be held at Ben F. Brown’s Memorial Funeral Home on Monday, October 3, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. Visitation will precede the service at 2:00 p.m. Gone forever is her smiling face; gone forever is her helping hand; gone forever are her encouraging words of wisdom. But never forgotten is her love in our memories. May her spirit soar high into the heavens to be with other angels alike, and may God bless her sweet, strong soul. Goodbye beautiful Mother. We know you are at peace now.
