Hard to write. Learned Don Lightfoot died yesterday. I love Don, he was a good friend, a kind soul. A loyal friend. Don never made a big deal about it but, he always had your back. Always. A flood of memories have come to me. All of them good, most funny, all bringing a smile. Unfortunately, we had not seen each other in many years. Life took us in different directions. I first met him at Lee Britain Elementary in Mrs. Grantvedt’s 5th grade class in 1967. There is nothing more wonderful than to have friends. We lost touch for a time as he and his family moved to El Paso. They came back to Irving when Don was in high school and we were reunited like there had been no gap. Told my wife a little earlier that “We hung out as he went through three girlfriends.” We double dated and had fun. I remember times when I would be like, “where’s Don?” and would later learn that after being out late at night he had taken off and driven back to El Paso through the night and into the morning to see his friends out there. Don was almost always joyful, I never recall seeing him look worried, concerned maybe, but never worried. He always seemed to have this attitude that he would overcome whatever came his way. Don was a kind soul and a better friend to me than I was to him. I think most anyone who counted him as a friend would say the same thing.
