Obituary for Alverden Mellinger "Al" Riker

Alverden (Al) Riker was born in Wichita, Kansas on January 21, 1937 and peacefully passed on August 30, 2014 surrounded by his family. He is survived by Karen his beloved wife of 55 years, sons Mark and wife Melinda, Steven and wife Laurie, grandsons Brice, Brett and wife Amanda, Adam, great grandson Brylen; sister Patricia and husband John Conderman and many nieces and nephews. Al moved to Irving in 1969 from Kansas. He attended Wentworth Military from 7th grade through the first two years of junior college. He attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and was named Battalion Commander his final year. He graduated from Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri in 1959 with a business administration degree. He served six months in Fort Knox, Kentucky as a tank commander and retired as 1st Lieutenant. He founded Continental Electric in 1971 and then started Riker Electric in 1975. He received his 50 year pin from the Salina Masonic Lodge #60 AF&AM in 2009 and was a member of The Hella Shrine. He was also a lifetime member of the ROA and the Elks Lodge. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, September 5, 2014 at Brown’s Memorial Funeral Home with Rev. Sammy Hargrove officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 PM Friday prior to the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital or the Vogel Alcove Association or your favorite charity.
