Obituary for Ann Louise James (Lawrie)

Ann Louise (Lawrie) James, 83 of McKinney, Texas went to be with her Lord and Savior on the morning of February 13, 2023. She was born on March 9, 1939, in Indianapolis, Indiana to Joseph Lawrie and Louise (Gilliam) Lawrie. She graduated from the Sacred Heart of Indianapolis in 1957. The Indianapolis 500 race track was a special place for Ann. She was crowned the first festival Queen of the Indianapolis 500 in 1959 and met her future husband, Richard “Dick” James at the 1959 race while he was on leave from the United States Marine Corp. She and Dick were married one year later. Her youngest son was born on race day in 1964 and her husband died on race day in 2008. After starting their family they moved to Charleston, West Virginia, living in the Midwest, California and then making their way to Huntsville, Texas and finally settling in McKinney, Texas. Ann was active throughout her life hosting a morning television show in Charleston and serving on the City Council in Huntsville, Texas as well as volunteering for many organizations including teaching swim lessons at the YMCA and supporting and volunteering in all of her children’s activities. Ann will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Richard “Dick” James; sister Sue Lawrie Burkert. Left behind to cherish her memory son Jay James and wife Kim; son, Joseph “Todd” James and wife Suzanne; son, Jeff James; grandchildren Dillon and Jessica James; Taylor, Kendell and Travis James and sister Jay Lawrie.
