Obituary for Dr. Donald Leigh Oberlin

Donald L. Oberlin was born an only child in Massillon, Ohio, March 21, 1926 to Frank and Gladys Oberlin. He went home to the Lord April 23, 2021. He graduated from Massillon Ohio high school and Denison University where he played football which was his most loved sport of his life. He remained a faithful fan of the Massillon Tigers and Ohio State Buckeyes his whole life. While doing post graduate work in public health at University of North Carolina, he met the love of his life, Mary Helen Mullins. Don and Mary married August 31, 1952 and have been married for 68 years. He finished his medical degree in 1958 from the University of Texas Southwestern. They moved to Ohio after medical school so he could specialize in Radiology. The love of the Dallas area and several friends from medical school brought Don and Mary to Irving where he continued his practice of over 30 years. Don was active in the Irving community by being a part of the American Lung Association locally and throughout the State of Texas. Rotary Club was such an important part of Don’s life for many years of his live. Don and Mary sponsored six different exchange students from around the world and they remained as family even after their return back to their home countries. One of the most fun of all his community services was serving on the board of the Irving Convention and Visitors Bureau. Everywhere he served he developed great friendships that lasted beyond his service. Golf was Don’s passion and played every chance he could at Las Colinas Country Club where he also served as President of the Board. Don was a true Patriot and had a passion for history. He had a way of making history come alive. Don was a devoted Husband, loving and nurturing father and grandfather and great-grandfather. To know him, was to love him.
