Obituary for Eveline Violet "Betty" Payne

Eveline Violet “Betty” Payne, 101, of Irving, Texas, went home to her Lord and Savior on March 4, 2022.

Eveline was born on July 8, 1920, to George and Clara (nee Whiting) Lovell in Burton Latimer, Northamptonshire, England. In May of 1938, Eveline began her service with the St. John’s Ambulance Association as a home nurse’s aide. Throughout her growing years and up until the end of WWII, she and her brother, Albert would sing professionally at numerous venues, including the Burton Latimer Baptist Church and her home church, St. Mary’s the Virgin, Burton Latimer. She continued her service as a home nurse’s aide during WWII. In 1942, Eveline met US PFC James D. Payne at a USO dance in the village of Grafton Underwood, England. They were married September 16, 1944. When WWII ended in 1945, Eveline began preparing to come to America and left England on the first commercial ship in 1946. James and Eveline resided in Dallas, Texas and in February 1948 daughter, Valerie Jean was born. In 1956 she joined First Baptist Church of Irving and remained a member until 2005, when she moved her membership to Oakview Baptist Church of Irving. In 1960 she elected to give up her English citizenship and completed certification to become an American Citizen. In 1967, Eveline began working at Texas Instruments as a kitting specialist and retired from Texas Instruments in 1987.

Eveline was a mighty Prayer Warrior and her loves in life were her Lord and Savior, her family, friends, English baking, music, and shopping. Oh, could she bake! The sausage rolls, mincemeat pie and Christmas cake will be greatly missed! After coming to America, she would continue singing with the First Baptist Church and Oakview Baptist Church for the next 70 years. She was a dedicated Sunday School teacher to children of all ages and after school Champs program at First Baptist Church for many years. She shared her love of music, knitting and crotchet techniques, and baking.

Eveline was predeceased by her parents George and Clara Lovell, brother Albert Lovell, and son-in-law Jesse Warren. Left to cherish her memory are, daughter, Valerie Warren of Bedford, granddaughters Shannon Hayes and husband Bobby of Irving, Stacy Warren of Bedford, Great grandchildren Nicholas and Brianna Hayes of Irving, nephew Chris Lovell and wife Stephanie of Queensland, Australia, niece Pam Stannard and husband Dennis of Kettering, England, Gerald Lovell and wife Carolyn of Silverstone, England, and numerous longtime friends.
