Obituary for Howard Block

Howard Walter Block of Irving passed away July 17, 2023 at Baylor Hospital in Irving Texas.

Howard was born January 20, 1941 in Bridgeport, CT to Emil and Dorothy Anderson Block - the 5th of 6 children. The family came to Arlington, Texas in 1947 when his dad moved with Vought Aircraft.

Howard attended Arlington Public schools and UTA, and due to his love of planes, he took flying lessons - wanted to be in the Air Force. This interest led to his primary career as an engineer who worked many years for Vought Aircraft as a tool designer. He also ran his own sign business in Irving for a while.

He met and married Nancy Dillon of Irving in June 1962 at UTA - a marriage that lasted for 61 years. They had three daughters - Elizabeth (Libby) , Gretchen(Greta) who passed away in 2011 from complications of diabetes and a transplant that did not work out, and Rachel.

Howard was a marvelous man who could build or fix almost anything.

He was a superb mechanic, did his own photography, re-paired much of the house they lived in for 57 years, built wooden musical instruments, was quite an expert with computers and his latest interest was genealogy and he found many ancestors that we did not know about - even some new cousins through DNA.

Howard was a good citizen and ran for city council and mayor at one time. He led a good and honest life and was proud of being an American and raising his family in Irving.

Survivors are his wife, Nancy of Irving, two daughters - Elizabeth (Libby) Treat and Rachel Smith and her husband Brooks Smith of Richardson, Tx. He and Nancy have three grandchildren - Chloe Smith and her husband Trey Binegar of Aubrey, Tx., Rose Treat of Irving and Anders Smith of Richardson, and sister Judi and her husband William Boyles of Dallas, plus several in-laws, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Brown’s Memorial Funeral in Irving at 1:00p.m. on Thursday, July 20, 2023. Following the memorial a reception will be held at the Block family home.
