Obituary for Lynn C. York

Mary Lynn Conkling York passed away April 27, 2020 at her home in Irving, Texas surrounded by loved ones after a short yet courageous battle with lung cancer at the age of 84. She was born March 5, 1936, to Dr. William Evans and Eva Louise (Newman) Conkling in Katy, Texas. She married her husband John Franklin York and spent a wonderful 47 years by his side. Lynn attended Lamar High School in Houston, Texas. She went on to graduate from the University of Houston, earning both a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master of Education. Lynn taught elementary and middle school in the Irving Independent School District for over 30 years, with 26 of those years spent teaching reading at Travis Middle School. After retiring, Lynn tutored English students in the writing lab at North Lake College. She had many passions and hobbies which included: Las Colinas Women’s Associations, Red Hat Society, book club, bible study, and an avid bridge player in multiple groups. Lynn was also an active member in many organizations such as: Chi Omega Fraternity, Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary organization for women’s educators, PEO Philanthropic Educational Organization, Second Saturday Bridge group, Marathon Bridge, and a faithful and dedicated volunteer at the Plymouth Park Methodist Church in Irving.

Lynn is preceded in death by her husband John Franklin York, father, Dr. William Evans Conkling, and mother, Eva Louise (Newman) Conkling. Left to cherish her memory is daughter Allyson (York) Utz and husband Jason of Lubbock, Texas, along with Lynn’s beloved grandchildren Barrett and Carson Utz, along with numerous other family and friends who will miss her dearly.
