Obituary for Marvin Eugene Prater

Our precious hero received his ultimate healing on December 27, 2021. Marvin Eugene Prater of Irving, TX, born August 5, 1943, at home in Terrell, TX left this earthly home for his eternal one. He met his wife, Frankie Jewel Turner in elementary school and they were married June 2, 1962. They enjoyed 59 wonderful years together, leaving behind a legacy of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. They moved to Irving, TX in 1965 while Marvin worked as an air conditioning and building engineer until he retired in 2009.

Marvin loved to fish, hunt, wood working, watching westerns while shelling pecans, and piddling in the garage (hiding from his to-do list). He enjoyed spending time with his grandkids, wife, and taking naps. If he wasn’t building something or tending to the garden at home on a weekend, you’d find him with the family at the lake, from early morning when the fish were biting, to afternoons cooking out and spending time together.

He was the hardest-working man we’ve ever known. Growing up on a farm instilled in him the work ethic needed to provide for his family, no matter what. He was a very quiet man – a man of few words but taught his children more than words could with how he treated others and modeled for them how to love well. His dedication to his wife was shown when he would dance with her while listening to “Hub Cap Carter” on the radio on Friday nights. He was protective of his wife and always made her feel safe and would move furniture as often as she asked him to. He loved her cooking, especially catfish and quail. He also loved going frog-gigging and eating frog legs, but Mom refused to fix those!

He is survived by his loving wife, Frankie Jewell Prater, daughter Pam Hargrave and husband Greg of Irving, son Marvin Dale Prater and wife Tricia of Little Elm, daughter Vicki Prater of Boerne, and daughter Misty Greer and husband Shane from Granbury. His grandchildren: Ben and Erin Hargrave, Daniel Hargrave, Hannah and Tate Haidle, Amanda and James Lewis, Joshua Prater, Thomas Prater, Jonathan and Maica Prater, Hailey Elrod, Abigail Elrod, Emily Elrod, Madison Greer, and Noah Greer. His great-grandchildren: Krista Skiles and Kennedy Lewis. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, M.L. & Julia Prater, sister Patricia Goode, brother Robert Prater, sister-in-law Vickie Prater, and 2 granddaughters, Riley Jene Elrod, and Moriah Greer.
