Obituary for Ilene Ashworth

Ilene Ashworth was born Mary Ilene Veyon on August 5, 1931, in Grafton, WV, to Arthur & Mae Veyon. She always loved her “Almost Heaven, West Virginia” and the fond memories of her childhood.

A life-long member of the Church of Christ, she met her future husband, Ray Ashworth, as a teenager at a church revival. Several years later, on July 4, 1952, she married Ray in Fairbanks, Alaska, where he was stationed in the US Army.

Just as their parents had done, Ilene and Ray raised their six children to know God, study the Bible, and – as Christ taught - live lives in faith and service to others. She set an example to her children by inviting visitors at church to come home for Sunday dinner; opening her home and heart to foster children; calling and visiting shut-ins; cooking meals for those in need; being mindful, prayerful, and giving to those who were struggling.

Ilene attended Fairmont State Teachers College, Clarksburg School of Art & Design, and, post children, went to night school in Michigan and Texas. She retired from the Irving Independent School District in 1998. She served as president of the PTA where her children attended school - in Willowick, OH; Livonia, MI; and Irving, TX. She was patriotic and civic -minded, spending a lifetime as a community and elections volunteer.

Ilene was an athlete in school, playing competitively in basketball, softball, and volleyball. As an adult, she enjoyed volleyball with other couples from church and was in a women’s bowling league. She was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys, Stars, Mavericks, and Texas Rangers.

Most importantly, Ilene loved her family. She gave selflessly to her husband, children and grandchildren and loved having her greatgrandchildren around her. She spoke daily with her sister.

Ilene went on hospice in April of this year. She spent her final days with her daughters, special caregivers, and hospice caring for her. In the days preceding her death, family and friends visited her for the last time. In the weeks and months prior, she kept in touch with many friends and family, near and far. She was anxious to be with the Lord and, blessedly, He took her to be with Him on September 27, 2023.
