Obituary for Rives McBee

Rives Russell McBee, 84, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2023, in Dallas, Texas. He was born on October 31, 1938 in Denton, Texas to parents Fred and Margaret McBee. Rives married his lovely wife, Kay Harlan on October 6, 1961.

Rives graduated from Denton High School in 1957. He earned a golf scholarship to North Texas State. He proudly served his country in the Army National Guard before returning to graduate from North Texas. Upon graduation, Rives worked as a physical education teacher at Garland High School in Garland while playing the Texas amateur circuit. He then became an Assistant Pro at Midland Country Club in Midland, Texas. In 1966, he qualified for the U.S. Open at the Olympic Country Club in San Francisco, California. There he shot a record-breaking low score of 64 which earned him a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. He then joined the PGA Tour until he became the Head Pro at Las Colinas Country Club in Irving. He continued playing in PGA Club Professional tournaments around the country. He moved on to become the Director of Golf at the Las Colinas Sports Club and then taught golf lessons at the Hyatt Bear Creek Golf Club before debuting on the PGA Senior Tour in 1989. Rives was inducted into two halls of fame-North Texas Athletics 2022 Hall of Fame and The GHS (Golf Heritage Society) Hall of Fame.

Rives was known to many as "Da Pro". He had a larger-than-life personality. "The key thing is" you knew his opinion about anything you were discussing-whether you wanted it or not. He was passionate about his family and friends and would be happy to tell you about the ones he loved.

Rives was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Margaret McBee, his brother Johnny and wife Nell, and his brother Jimmy, and brother-in-law Jack Duncan.

Left to cherish the memory of Rives are his wife of 62 years, Kay McBee, daughters, Kayla Dyess (husband, Bobby) and Kathy Miller; grandchildren, Corey Miller, Taryn Lorance (husband, Gary) and Carly Dyess; and great-grandsons, Tyson and Waylon Lorance. He is also survived by brothers, Freddie (wife, Sara) and Ronnie, in-laws, Myrle Duncan, Joy Bastian (husband, Richard), James Harlan (wife, Raetta) and many loving cousins, nieces, nephews and a multitude of friend.
