Obituary for Rev. Sandra K. Elms

Rev. Sandra Kay Elms, 77 of Roanoke, Tx. went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, October 21, 2023. She was born on August 12, 1946, in Wichita Falls, Texas to Thomas Doyle “Bud” Buffington and Goldie Ola (Williams) Buffington.

Sandra grew up in and raised her five children in Irving. During her life, Sandra spent much of this time as a single mom raising her five children primarily on her own. In her early career Sandra worked for several local Irving businesses to provide for her five children often times working multiple jobs to make ends meet. In her early career, she worked as a waitress at Owens Drive Inn and Harvey’s Barbeque Pit and later as the Maid Supervisor for LaQuinta and Ramada Inn. She spent the remainder of her career in apartment management for multi-family apartment complexes across the metroplex although many were right here in her hometown of Irving.

However, her passion was singing. Before coming to a full relationship with Christ, Sandra would sing at different ‘honky tonks’ and competitions. One of those earned her 1st Place and resulted not only in a cash award but also recording her own 45 record.

Sandra’s love for the Lord and roots planted by her mother brought her back to Him. During this time, Sandra would minister at local churches by singing and teaching on the goodness of Jesus. Sandra earned her Ministers license preaching and singing across the country with her late husband Elvin. Together, they formed Elms Ministries. Before he became ill, they stayed local and ministered together at nursing homes to bring joy to the residents. Sandra received several nominations from The Southern Gospel Music Association for her passion of singing southern gospel music and winning Female Vocalist of the year in 2012. She recorded eleven gospel CD’s where the proceeds primarily went to fund their travel expenses to continue to share the gospel.

She will be remembered as a great cook who only knew how to feed an army of people. When she cooked, it was for the masses. She would feed her family, neighbors, and often random folks who were alone and needed a friend to lean on. Cooking and serving others were her love language. She had a generous and giving heart often times leaving nothing for herself. Her love for the Lord was first and foremost, her family meant everything to her, but she also adored her puppy “Radar.”

Sandra is preceded in death by her parents Thomas and Goldie Buffington, her husband Rev. Elvin Ward Elms; five brothers (Joe, Billy Doyle, Thomas, Ronnie, & Emory); two sisters (Helen and Norma) and one son-in-law (Butch).

She leaves behind to cherish her memory, daughter Kimberly Kay Evans and husband Martin Hill; daughter Linda Sue Peckham; daughter Twila Jean Kearney and husband Joseph; son Dale Ray Eitel and wife Silvia; daughter Cindy Diane Martinez and husband George; sister Dorothy Tharp and husband Richard; sister Shirley Cooper and husband Bill; grandchildren Koty, Jeffrey, Savanna, Karen, B.J., Andrew and Ryan; eleven great-grandchildren and her beloved puppy, Radar.
