Obituary for Shirley "Sandy" Slocum Lang

Shirley Marie Slocum Lang
1930—2021

Shirley “Sandy” Marie Slocum was born September 22, 1930 in Boston, Massachusetts and was
raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She graduated from Cambridge High and Latin in 1948 and
began her nursing studies at Newton-Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing. Just prior to finishing
her degree, she married Arthur L. Lang, Jr. on May 18, 1951. As Arthur began his career in Texas
at Vought Corporation, Sandy completed her degree and graduated from Newton-Wellesley in June
1951. She joined her husband in Texas and began her new life working in various hospitals. She
spent many years at Irving Hospital working nights in Labor and Delivery, Newborn care, and
eventually became a school nurse within the Irving School District.
Even when her children were quite young, Sandy began teaching Childrens' Sunday School
and continued that service for forty years. She consistently kept her nursing skills updated, and enrolled in courses at East Texas State University of Commerce, where she received her Bachelor
of Science degree in 1977.

After her husband received his MBA from Dallas Seminary, Sandy supported his work in
missions, traveling with him throughout the world visiting churches and foreign mission families.
When Arthur suffered a stroke in the mid-nineties, she utilized all her nursing skills and became his
sole caregiver for the next eighteen years. After Arthur passed away, Sandy's children helped her
move into a lovely assisted living apartment, where she lived for about five years. On February 12,
2021, she peacefully entered the presence of the Lord just after midnight.
Sandy is survived by her three adult children: son Steve Lang, daughter Debbie Smith and
her husband Barry, and son Philip Lang and his wife Tonya. Her sister-in-law, Barbara Slocum
lives in Massachusetts, not far from daughters Cindy and Heidi and their children.
