Shirley led a very active life, involved with the First United Methodist Church of Galesburg, Home Culture Club, and was an avid bridge player. She was an excellent craftswoman who sewed, knitted, painted but especially enjoyed quilting. She loved entertaining, and even up to her last days was planning events for neighbors in her community. In her prime, she was very talented around the home with repairs and renovation and her skills included decorating, wallpapering, painting, restoration, and upholstery. She was an active gardener at her home in rural Illinois, with flowers, landscaping, fruits, and vegetables.

With declining health, in 2017 Shirley moved to Texas to be closer to her two children and grandchildren.
