Gentleman John

During Middle School I had the honor of going to a student government conference at SMU in Dallas.  As soon as Uncle John knew about this, he wanted to take me to dinner.  My rare meals out with family were usually at an A&W or a local drugstore.  I had never had a dinner date so I was nervous and felt like a country bumpkin. How was I supposed to act?

I need not have worried.  John was never condescending to me, instead he treated me like a peer.  He opened car doors for me, put his hand on my arm to guide me to the table, and pulled the chair out for me.  Goodness, I didn’t know what to think!  But his demeanor was a perfect model for me.  I managed to behave like a “little lady” that night.

I remember the evening like a dream, watching other adults, believing I was now part of this world.  Of course, this gentlemanly behavior did not occur again in my life until I was in college, since the high school boys were  as awkward as I.  But I’ve never forgotten the night my dear, sweet Uncle John, with a twinkle in his eyes, gave me a glimpse into the world of grown-ups.  Thank you, Uncle John.
