I was fortunate to know a bit of John as he was kind enough to share some of his life with me. John shared some of when he was in New Guinea in the South Pacific during WWII. He always joked that he was there to guard the tennis courts and the nurses. It was typical of him to downplay what he did. John finally admitted that he did early chemical warfare testing in the jungles of New Guinea, after the battle of course he said. I don't think it was too much after the battle because he said he saw Japanese POW's there. John told how they had constructed a still in the woods and showed me pictures of him and another guy milking cobras for venom so they could make cobra anti-venom for bites.
One thing I know personally is that John liked really strong coffee. He would come in and get a cup of pretty good coffee and then take out of his pocket a jar of instant coffee and add a teaspoon of that to the cup of coffee. Then he would say - " Now its good coffee". John had a wonderful sense of humor and I shall miss him.
